The New “Dynamcis Behavior of Liquids in Moving Containers”, by Dodge, Franklin T., Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio, Texas, 2000
and the SLOSHXL code
Southwest Research Institute has been active in the field of fluid sloshing dynamics and fluid management devices since the early days of the space program. This activity includes slosh dynamics analyses using modeling tools and computational fluid dynamics (CFD simulations), the testing of propellent tanks to experimentally determine mechanical analog models for slosh dynamics, and the design of propellant management devices.
The report and the modeling tool described here are provided for the use of engineers and analysts interested in learning about the sloshing dynamics of fluids in moving containers. The focus here is on spacecraft vehicles, but there are applications to the motions of fluids in other containers such as trucking, ship tanks, rail cars, and tanks subjected to earthquake motions.

This report was written in 1966 but remains in wide use as a reference throughout the fluid slosh community.

| SLOSH_Model_Derivations.pdf | PDF Document | The equations of motion for three simple mechanical analog models of slosh dynamics in cylindrical tanks are derived in detail. The models are compared to show that they are equivalent with respect to the force and moment loads of the fluid on the tank. |
